Gauhati HC Orders Basic Aid for Eviction-Hit Families in Goalpara

The Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam government to provide basic humanitarian support to families displaced by eviction drives in Goalpara district last June. Hearing a petition by 60 affected persons, the court ordered the supply of drinking water, medical care, sanitation facilities and food grains through fair price shops.

The court observed that the right to life includes dignity, safe water, sanitation and healthcare. Authorities have been asked to file affidavits by March 9 detailing the assistance being provided. The matter will be heard again on March 11.
