Gauhati HC Questions Demolition of 21 Houses on Private Land

Goalpara: The Gauhati High Court has questioned the demolition of 21 houses on private agricultural land in Goalpara, observing that there appeared to be no imminent danger warranting such action. Justice Devashis Baruah also said the use of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, prima facie appeared to require scrutiny.

The houses were demolished on September 7 after the Matia Circle Officer issued 24-hour notices. The court has asked the district commissioner and circle officer to file affidavits and will consider compensation if the demolition is ultimately found to have been unauthorised. The matter is scheduled for hearing on October 13.
