Gauhati High Court Grants Bail to Dr. Sangeeta Dutta After Two Years in Custody

The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to psychiatrist Dr. Sangeeta Dutta, over two years after her arrest on charges of assault and sexual abuse of two children she and her husband had claimed to adopt. Her husband was granted bail earlier on October 28. Dr. Dutta’s counsel argued that mandatory procedures were not followed during her arrest and that the trial had made slow progress, with only 15 of 74 witnesses examined. The court ordered her release on a ₹1 lakh bond with strict conditions, including surrendering all ID documents, cooperating with the trial, and avoiding contact with the victims or informant.
