Gauhati High Court Stays Baghmari Eviction Drive
The eviction drive scheduled for September 7 at Baghmari in Biswanath district has been halted after the Gauhati High Court intervened on a petition filed by residents facing eviction.
The court directed the Biswanath district administration to submit a detailed report by October 8 on whether the land in question falls under a Village Grazing Reserve (VGR). Until then, no eviction will be carried out.
The administration had earlier issued notices to 433 families accused of encroaching on 265 bighas of VGR land, but the petitioners claimed long-term possession and sought legal protection. VGR lands are reserved for community grazing, and Assam has intensified eviction drives in recent years to reclaim them.
