Gauhati High Court Upholds Eviction from Nagaon Reserve Forests

Guwahati, Assam: The Gauhati High Court has dismissed appeals filed by settlers occupying reserve forest land in Nagaon, upholding the eviction order issued by the Forest Department. The court ruled that hardship alone cannot create a legal right over reserved forest land but allowed eligible families to seek rehabilitation under applicable government schemes. It also extended the deadline to vacate the land by 45 days considering the monsoon season.
