Gogoi Says 2026 Assam Polls Will Be a People’s Verdict

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Friday said the 2026 Assam Assembly elections would be unprecedented, framing the contest as one between the people of Assam and a “self-perceived king.” Addressing a mass convention in Dibrugarh, he claimed widespread public anger against the ruling dispensation and alleged misuse of money, welfare schemes, and divisive politics.

Gogoi said Opposition parties are uniting to protect democracy and citizens’ rights, asserting that the election outcome will have national significance. Leaders from several Opposition parties and civil society groups echoed concerns over erosion of democratic values and called for unity to unseat the BJP-led government.
