A dispute erupted when the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) removed a signboard renaming the area from “Lakhimijan” to “Miajaan.” The change, claimed by locals to honor Miajaan Ali, sparked controversy after a complaint from the Dakshin Janakpur Nagarik Samity. Residents argued that “Miajaan” has been used for a long time and accused others of conspiring to change the name. The Samity previously reached out to the GMC, expressing concerns about the renaming and requesting intervention to resolve the issue, which involves a crucial canal for the Hatigaon area.
