Illegal Sand Mining Ravages Kolong River Belt, Locals Allege Official Inaction

Large-scale illegal sand mining is reportedly continuing unchecked along the Kolong River belt, especially under the West Dharmatul Range, raising serious environmental concerns.
Locals allege that sand mafia groups are openly excavating riverbeds near Telahi using heavy machinery, digging up to 10 feet deep and threatening riverbank stability across Nagaon district and Morigaon district. Dumpers are said to transport sand without permits or taxes.
Residents claim officials have ignored violations despite repeated assurances by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on zero tolerance. Activists warn the mining violates the Forest Act and National Green Tribunal norms, risking erosion, floods, and long-term ecological damage.
Villagers have demanded immediate inspections and strict action, but authorities are yet to respond.
