Karimganj Police Crack Down on Cryptocurrency Scam in Barak Valley
In a major operation targeting cyber criminals, Karimganj police conducted raids across various parts of the Barak Valley, including Cachar, resulting in the arrest of two individuals involved in cyber crimes on Friday evening. The operation revealed a network of illicit activities by the arrested individuals, who were found with a significant amount of cyber equipment and fraudulent documents. The two suspects, Sultan Ahmed Choudhury and Mostaqin Ahmed Laskar, were involved in a cryptocurrency investment scam.
The investigation began when Jahan Uddin filed an FIR at the Patharkandi police station, claiming he was duped by an agency that collected money for cryptocurrency investments. He discovered that the agency was a front for a group of miscreants using fake apps to cheat people with false promises of high returns. The case, registered by Ratabari PS (case no. 126/24), led to a probe that uncovered the scam.
Additional Superintendent of Police Karimganj, Pratap Das, stated that the two suspects were detained with the help of Sonai PS and Kalain PS of Cachar DEF. A search of Sultan Ahmed Choudhury’s house resulted in the seizure of Rs. 50 lakh in cash, a Macbook, an iPhone, a OnePlus mobile, and a TATA Nexon vehicle. These items were seized in the presence of witnesses. Efforts are ongoing to further understand the operation and the extent of the scam involving fake cryptocurrency apps.
