Kokrajhar Tense After Rape Accused Shot During Alleged Escape Attempt

Tension prevailed in Kokrajhar after police shot and injured the prime accused in the rape of a mentally challenged woman during an alleged escape attempt while being taken to court on Sunday. Police said the accused, Rafikul Islam, tried to flee after snatching a weapon from a policeman during a stop near Rani Ghuli, prompting retaliatory firing. Islam sustained a bullet injury, while two policemen were also hurt.

The accused was first treated at Kokrajhar RNB Civil Hospital and later referred to Kokrajhar Medical College. His arrest had triggered widespread protests, road blockades and a 12-hour bandh in Kokrajhar, disrupting normal life. To maintain order, the administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The situation remains under close watch as the investigation continues.
