KRNSU Stages Sit-In in Kajalgaon, Renews ST Status Demand

Kajalgaon: The Koch Rajbongshi National Students’ Union (KRNSU) staged a three-hour sit-in at Kajalgaon on Wednesday, pressing for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Koch Rajbongshi community. The organisation also demanded withdrawal of the Bodoland Territorial Council’s (BTC) new land policy, which it said was against the interests of indigenous communities, and renewed its demand for a separate Kamatapur state.

KRNSU central president Hridayjit Barman said the organisation had previously received assurances from the Assam government but was still awaiting a concrete outcome. He also demanded a Chief Minister-level meeting before October 3 and warned that the organisation would intensify its agitation, including a proposed BTC office gherao, if the meeting was not held. A memorandum outlining the three demands was submitted to the Chief Minister through the Chirang District Commissioner.
