Legal Notice Issued as Tensions Rise Over CAA in State, Opposition Faces Action for ‘Sarbatmak Hartal’

Amidst heightened tensions over the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Office of the Commissioner of Police issued a legal notice in the state to prevent damage to public property and ensure the safety of citizens during forceful agitations. The “United Opposition Forum” has called for a “Sarbatmak Hartal” on March 12, 2024, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., potentially leading to road blockades, shop closures, and damage to public and private property. The notice warns of legal action, including invoking the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, with the intention to recover the total cost of damages. Assam DGP GP Singh has also implemented strict regulations for potential protests against the CAA, following its recent implementation by the Centre.
