Massive Protest in Haflong Against Proposed ST Status for Six Communities

Thousands of tribal students and community members marched in Haflong on Wednesday protesting the Assam government’s proposal to grant ST status to six communities — Chutia, Koch-Rajbongshi, Matak, Moran, Tai-Ahom and Tea Tribe (Adivasi).

Organised by the All Tribal Students’ Organisation of Dima Hasao, the rally moved through key town areas before submitting a memorandum to the deputy commissioner. Protesters claimed the move would dilute existing tribal rights and reduce access to education, jobs, welfare schemes and political reservation for current ST groups.

Student leaders argued the six communities have a combined population of nearly 90 lakh—over twice the existing ST population—raising fears of loss of representation and opportunities for smaller tribes. They rejected the proposed ‘ST (Valley)’ sub-category, calling it a “back-door entry.”

The demonstrators warned of intensified statewide agitation if the proposal moves forward while calling for unity among recognised tribes. The protest remained peaceful.
