Meghalaya Cabinet Clears MLCU Amendment Bill to Align With UGC Rules

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Martin Luther Christian University (Amendment) Bill, 2026, aimed at bringing the private university’s legal framework in line with applicable University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the proposed changes would restrict the university’s operations to Meghalaya and remove provisions related to distance education and college affiliation.
The amendment is part of a wider set of education-related legislative measures being taken up by the state government. MLCU was established under the Martin Luther Christian University Act, 2005, passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, and the proposed changes are intended to clarify its operational scope and ensure compliance with the regulatory framework governing private universities.
