Meghalaya Emerges as Key Transit Route for Cattle Smuggling

Cattle smuggling syndicates are using Meghalaya as a new transit route, shifting from Assam. Cattle are transported via small vans from Assam to Meghalaya, then transferred to large trucks under inhumane conditions. Sources report 30-40 vehicles smuggling cattle daily, with syndicates bribing officials to evade detection. Smuggled cattle are eventually sent to Bangladesh through West Khasi Hills. South Kamrup organisations have urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take strict action against the illegal trade.
