Meghalaya’s Living Root Bridges Submitted for UNESCO World Heritage Status

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the dossier for the state’s iconic Living Root Bridges has been formally submitted to UNESCO for consideration under the 2026–27 World Heritage List. The submission, made in Paris by India’s UNESCO representative, marks a key step toward global recognition of the indigenous, sustainable tradition. Sangma expressed hope that the bridges, found mainly in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills, will be inscribed and bring international recognition to the local communities preserving this unique heritage.
