Mithun Bovine Species Discovered for the First Time in Assam’s Dima Hasao District
Mithun (Bos frontalis), a bovine species native to northeastern India, has been confirmed in Assam for the first time, specifically in Dima Hasao district. This discovery enhances Assam’s biological diversity and offers new opportunities for local farmers. Mithun, crucial to the socio-economic and cultural life of tribal communities, are now reared in Laisong, Langting, and Thaijuwari villages. To support Mithun farmers, the government initiated an awareness program providing essential resources like fencing materials, night shelter supplies, and water storage facilities.
