Mizoram-Assam Officials Meet to Ease Border Tensions
Deputy Commissioners of Mizoram’s Mamit and Assam’s Hailakandi districts met at Bairabi to defuse fresh border tensions after Assam forest officials allegedly destroyed 290 rubber plants near Saikhawthlir village. Mizoram claimed the area falls under its Kawrtha forest division, while Assam maintained it is part of the Gharmura reserved forest, where plantations are restricted under the Reserved Forest Act, 1980. Both sides agreed to resolve the issue amicably, prevent future incidents, and refer the matter to higher authorities. The dispute stems from conflicting colonial-era demarcations of 1875 and 1933.
