Nalbari Residents Protest Over Fatal Elephant Attacks

Residents of northern Nalbari staged a six-hour protest on NH-27 at Sonamati Chowk, demanding action against escalating man-elephant conflicts. A herd of elephants from Bhutan has been destroying crops, damaging homes, and endangering lives in several villages.

The protest intensified after 23-year-old Mintu Barman succumbed to injuries from a midnight elephant attack in Govindapur. Protesters blocked Minister Bimal Bora’s convoy and brought the victim’s body to the protest site.

Demands included ₹50 lakh compensation for the victim’s family, government job recruitment for a family member, and financial aid for affected families. The protest ended after Forest Minister Chandramohan Patwari assured action.
