Navy Recovers Body from Flooded Assam Mine; Rescue Efforts Continue

Deep divers from the Indian Navy recovered the body of Ganga Bahadur Srestho, a miner from Nepal, trapped in an 85-foot-deep flooded mine in Umrangso. Rescue operations continue for eight others still trapped, with personnel from the Navy, Army, and NDRF leading efforts.

Advanced equipment, de-watering pumps, and support from ONGC and Coal India are aiding the mission. The mine flooded on January 6 due to a breach in an adjacent unused mine. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed condolences and assured continued rescue efforts. The incident underscores the risks of illegal mining.
