NF Railway Installs Hot Box Detectors to Enhance Train Safety

Northeast Frontier Railway (NF Railway) has prioritized the detection of hot axle failures to ensure safer train movements. Hot Box Detectors (HBDs) have been strategically installed at station platforms to monitor rolling in and rolling out trains. These sensor-based HBDs detect hot axles—caused by issues such as bearing failures, overloading, and faulty conditions—alerting railway staff to take preventive measures.

From 2020 to 2024, a total of 31 hot axle cases were detected, showing a decrease to a single case in 2023-24. Sixteen HBDs are currently installed at key stations including Kamakhya, Guwahati, New Bongaigaon, Rangapara North, New Jalpaiguri, and Katihar.

NF Railway is intensifying safety measures, including staff counseling and inter-departmental coordination, to prevent punctuality loss and enhance overall railway safety.
