NFR Accelerates Rail Modernisation with LHB Coaches, Cargo Terminals, and Green Initiatives

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has stepped up efforts to upgrade railway infrastructure and passenger amenities across Assam and the Northeast. Key initiatives include converting passenger trains from ICF coaches to modern LHB rakes to improve safety and comfort. Trains such as the Sealdah–Silchar Kanchanjunga Express have already been upgraded, with more conversions planned.
NFR is also providing pathways on railway bridges to enhance staff safety, with work underway on over 550 bridges and more planned in the coming years. Guwahati railway station is being developed as a 100% plastic recyclable station through a scientific waste management system.
Additionally, six new Gati Shakti cargo terminals are under construction in Assam to boost freight logistics, while Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) are being installed at multiple stations to promote digital ticketing and reduce congestion at counters.
