NGT Orders Probe into Industrial Encroachment Near Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the formation of a joint committee to investigate claims of industrial encroachment and environmental degradation near Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. The decision, issued on August 27, 2024, follows concerns from locals about brick kilns, cement factories, and stone quarries encroaching on the sanctuary’s eco-sensitive zone. The committee, comprising representatives from key environmental agencies, will conduct an on-site investigation and submit a report within a month. The next hearing is scheduled for October 4, 2024. The NGT’s action underscores the urgent need to protect this ecologically rich sanctuary from industrial threats.
