Northeast Frontier Railway Signs MoU with IIT Roorkee for AI-Based Bridge Crack Detection

Guwahati, October 31: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Roorkee on October 27 to develop an advanced crack detection system and assess the structural lifespan of railway steel bridges. The project will use artificial intelligence (AI), drone-based imaging and modern testing techniques to identify hidden cracks and structural weaknesses, particularly in bridges over 50 years old.
The collaboration also aims to develop a real-time monitoring system to detect fatigue-related damage and provide early warnings. NFR said the initiative would enhance bridge safety, improve maintenance planning and ensure the long-term reliability of railway infrastructure.
