Northeast to Get Full Railway Electrification by March 2026: Vaishnaw

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Northeast will achieve complete railway electrification by March 2026. Manufacturing units for locomotive re-manufacturing at Lumding and a wagon facility at Basugaon are in progress.

Plans include transforming Guwahati railway station into an IT hub, possibly featuring a 12-storey building. Vaishnaw also revealed six new Gatishakti cargo terminals, two Amrit Bharat trains (Silchar-Guwahati and Guwahati-Agartala), and the four-lining of the ‘chicken neck’ track. An electronics manufacturing hub is also proposed for Kamrup district.

He highlighted Assam’s rapid development, calling the Northeast the “new engine of growth.”
