Northeast’s Vast Renewable Energy Potential Largely Untapped: Conclave

Despite having 130 GW of renewable energy potential, the Northeast has planned deployment of only 2.3 GW, highlighting a major investment gap, speakers said at the Northeast India Clean Energy Conclave 2026 in Guwahati. The region’s power demand is projected to rise by over 40% by 2031–32, requiring a diversified and storage-backed power system. Assam officials highlighted progress in solar, pumped storage projects and rooftop installations, while experts stressed the need for policy clarity, domestic investment and integrated planning to convert opportunities into bankable clean energy projects.
