Opposition Leader Alleges Coercion by Fair Price Shops in Assam, Seeks Election Commission Intervention

Debabrata Saikia, Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, has raised concerns with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) regarding alleged intimidation of government scheme beneficiaries by fair price shops (FPS) in Assam. Saikia highlighted instances where beneficiaries were reportedly coerced into avoiding opposition party rallies and compelled to attend events organized by the BJP. He emphasized the violation of democratic rights and urged the Election Commission to conduct a thorough investigation. Saikia called for the suspension of erring FPS owners, identification of perpetrators, and implementation of measures to prevent such incidents in the future, stressing the importance of upholding democratic values during the electoral process.
