Opposition Unity Strained as Congress–Raijor Dal Seat Talks Face Hurdles

Cracks are emerging within Assam’s Opposition alliance ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, with the Congress indicating unease over seat-sharing talks with Raijor Dal. APCC president Gaurav Gogoi said negotiations are still ongoing and at different stages, while also raising concerns over Raijor Dal fielding former Congress leaders.

Though Gogoi said he remains hopeful about the alliance, he admitted it is weaker than before and that the final call rests with the Congress high command.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned that giving minority-dominated seats to smaller allies could cost Congress the Leader of the Opposition post, which requires at least 22 seats.
