Protests Disrupt Opening of Assam Assembly Session

The Assam Assembly’s winter session began on Tuesday with major protests by Opposition parties over eviction drives and the death of singer Zubeen Garg.

Leader of the Opposition and Akhil Gogoi demanded an adjournment motion on Garg’s death, which was accepted after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s intervention. Protesters outside the Assembly demanded a CBI probe and the Chief Minister’s resignation.

AIUDF and Congress also staged demonstrations, with Congress wearing black armbands. The Speaker warned members not to interfere with the ongoing investigation.

The session is expected to table 25 Bills.
