Protests in Guwahati Over Delayed ST Status for Six Assam Communities

Members of six ethnic communities in Assam protested in Guwahati, demanding long-promised Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Demonstrators burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing them of failing to fulfill a 2014 promise. Despite meeting the criteria for ST classification, the government has delayed the decision, leading to growing frustration. Police detained four protesters during the rally. Similar protests occurred across the state as communities vowed to continue their fight until their demands are met.
