Rabha Groups Oppose Kulsi Hydropower Project, Protest on June 9

Strong opposition has emerged against the proposed 55-MW Kulsi hydropower project following a meeting between the Assam and Meghalaya CMs. Rabha community bodies, including ARSU and Rabha Mahila Parishad, condemned the plan, citing ecological, cultural, and livelihood threats. They warned of large-scale protests if the project continues. A major demonstration is set for June 9 at Ukium village, with participation from various ethnic groups. Concerns include biodiversity loss, threat to Gangetic dolphins, damage to Chandubi lake, and downstream risks. Protesters demanded project cancellation and Sixth Schedule implementation instead.
