Rescue Operations Continue for Trapped Miners in Umrangso Rat-Hole Mine

Rescue efforts for miners trapped in the Umrangso illegal rat-hole mine entered their ninth day, hindered by persistent high water levels. Despite continuous dewatering, pumps have failed to lower the water significantly, possibly due to a connection with the nearby Kapili River. Four bodies have been recovered so far, including three on January 11. The Geological Survey of India is investigating the site for an underground river connection. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured comprehensive support for victims’ families and strict action against those responsible. Navy divers were withdrawn on January 7.
