Sarma Rejects BJP Role in Electoral Rolls, Cites ECI Authority

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday dismissed Opposition allegations of electoral roll manipulation, stating that the preparation of voters’ lists is the sole responsibility of the Election Commission of India and that the BJP has no role in the process.

Responding to claims by Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia that the BJP plans to add thousands of voters per constituency, Sarma urged the Congress to file objections through official channels instead of making public allegations. He said discrepancies are common in draft rolls and can be corrected through Forms 6, 7, and 8 before the January 22 deadline.

Sarma also said the BJP has identified errors, including names of deceased persons and migrants, and will submit objections accordingly, calling the claims of a “secret directive” baseless.
