Shillong to Bar Durga Puja Pandals From Occupying PWD Roads Next Year

Shillong: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal has warned that Durga Puja pandals occupying portions of PWD roads will not be allowed to continue in the same manner next year due to traffic congestion and public inconvenience. Existing structures have been permitted this year because relocation at this stage would be difficult. Authorities have directed sector magistrates and police to coordinate with local dorbars and Puja committees to minimise traffic disruptions.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Linguistic Minority Development Forum (MLMDF) has urged authorities to resolve concerns through dialogue, fair enforcement of rules and reasonable notice to Puja organisers. The administration will also introduce staggered immersion timings based on travel distances to manage congestion at the reduced-capacity immersion ghat. The forum emphasised balancing public safety and civic regulations with respect for religious traditions.
