Sinamara Tea Workers Protest Land Allocation for Tourism

Workers of Sinamara Tea Estate, founded by Maniram Dewan, began an indefinite protest against the government’s decision to allocate 200 bighas of tea estate land for a tourism project.

Fearing job losses, the Assam Tea Mazdoor Sangh had opposed the plan earlier but alleged the government proceeded without consultations. Workers demanded job security, fair treatment, and improved living conditions instead of displacement.

They urged the government to halt the project and hold discussions to protect their livelihood, emphasizing the garden’s role in sustaining generations of families.
