Supreme Court Gives Assam Two Weeks to Respond in Foreigners’ Cases

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted the Assam government two weeks to file its response to petitions challenging orders that declared five women as foreigners. The bench also directed that the matter be listed for hearing after two weeks.

The petitioners have challenged earlier orders of the Gauhati High Court, which upheld Foreigners Tribunal decisions declaring them illegal migrants. The Supreme Court had earlier stayed their deportation and reiterated that citizenship must be determined through a fair, lawful, and reasoned process.
