Supreme Court Raises Concerns Over Assam “Fake Encounters”

The Supreme Court of India, hearing a petition on alleged fake encounters in Assam, questioned the legality of recent deaths of accused individuals. The court suggested forming a Commission to investigate and adjourned the case to October 22, allowing the government time to respond. The petition, initially dismissed by the Gauhati High Court, called for an independent probe into 80 encounters since May 2021.
