Tension at Assam-Meghalaya Border After Mob Uproots Plantation in Disputed Area
Tension erupted in Lapangap village on the Assam-Meghalaya border after a mob uprooted saplings and dismantled structures erected by Assam’s Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. Around 400 villagers, backed by Meghalaya groups, claimed Assam was encroaching on disputed land. Tear gas was reportedly used. Officials confirmed the situation is under control, with police deployed and peace talks planned. The plantation took place without prior notice to Meghalaya authorities. Assam and Meghalaya are still resolving border disputes in six sensitive areas.
