Tension Mounts in Bijni as Students Protest English Medium Instruction for Science and Math

A tense situation unfolded in Assam’s Bijni as the All Assam Students Union (AASU) led a protest against the state government’s decision to introduce English as the medium of instruction for science and mathematics from class six onwards. Numerous regional student unions joined the demonstration on Monday, expressing their opposition to the government’s move. In a symbolic act, protesters burned an effigy of Assam’s Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on National Highway 15 during the protest. The AASU has been actively protesting the decision since its announcement, demanding a reversal of the government’s stance. Similar protests also occurred in Biswanath against the state government’s decision.
