Tezpur Police Arrest Three ULFA-I Members on Extortion Charges

In a significant crackdown on extremist activities, Tezpur Police arrested three members of the banned insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) on extortion charges. The apprehended individuals are Sanjeev Barua, alias Dadu; his wife Bedang Jungchila, alias Hazong; and Bhavesh Kalita, alias Kenai, all from Tezpur.

The trio had allegedly extorted funds from an organization at Mission Chariali in Tezpur. Police nabbed them while they were attempting to collect the demanded money from a business establishment. This arrest highlights the Assam police’s ongoing efforts to combat ULFA-I’s illicit activities and their dedication to eradicating the remnants of the militant outfit.

In a related operation last month, Dhan Bora, a former ULFA member, was arrested in a joint operation by security forces and Assam police for arms trafficking. Authorities found an American pistol and 12 rounds of live ammunition during a raid at his home in Kordoiguri Borgorah, underscoring the potential threat posed by illegal weapons trading in Assam.
