Tezpur University Shutdown Continues as Protestors Reject Govt Proposal

The shutdown at Tezpur University entered its sixth day on Thursday, with students and staff demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh. Protesters rejected Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s proposal to appoint a pro vice-chancellor, insisting instead on an acting VC and suspension of the current one.

The Tezpur University United Forum (TUUF) accused the chief minister of misunderstanding their core demand and questioned his late intervention. State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi also criticised Sarma for not supporting the university community.

Faculty and staff bodies continue to back the agitation, while limited campus activities have resumed for emergencies. The VC has not been seen on campus since an altercation with students in September.
