The construction of the 125-foot statue of Lachit Barphukan in Jorhat district, Assam, is approaching its final stages

The grand 125-foot statue of the legendary Ahom General, Veer Lachit Barphukan, positioned with a commanding index finger at Holongaper in Jorhat district, is in its final stages of completion. The State Government aims to extend an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the unveiling ceremony, scheduled for February this year, which will include the inauguration of the Lachit Barphukan Cultural Complex.

Holongaper, the burial site of Veer Lachit Barphukan, has been transformed into the National Hero Lachit Barphukan Maidam, with the present government expanding the complex to around 46/47 bighas of land, complementing the original four bighas.

With an estimated expenditure of Rs 120 crore, Dispur is investing in the cultural complex, featuring not only the iconic statue but also two museums, an auditorium, and residential facilities for research scholars. The Delhi-based firm initiated work on this significant project in the latter part of 2022, with the main statue of Lachit Barphukan now nearing completion. The ambitious project represents a homage to the greatest-ever Ahom general, preserving his legacy for generations to come.
