Three Major Dog Meat Wholesalers Exit Trade in Nagaland

Dimapur: In a major boost to animal welfare efforts, three long-time dog meat wholesalers in Nagaland have permanently exited the trade, surrendering their remaining 18 dogs and adopting alternative livelihoods through a rehabilitation programme.

Animal welfare organisations said the move is expected to significantly disrupt the dog meat supply chain in the region. Many of the rescued dogs have already been adopted, while others have been shifted to shelters in Assam for treatment and rehabilitation. Since 2025, the livelihood transition programme has also helped 30 women vendors leave the dog meat trade.
