Assam Govt Begins Preparations for 2024 Floods, New Embankments Planned

The Assam government has begun preparations for next year’s floods, with plans to build 240 km of new embankments, according to Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika. Tenders will be floated soon, and construction is set to start in January.

Hazarika revealed that the Centre secured a Rs 5,000 crore loan from the World Bank and ADB for flood and erosion control, with Assam receiving Rs 1,500 crore annually for embankment strengthening. He also noted that all embankment breaches from this year’s floods have already been repaired.
