Congress MLAs Ready to Resign Amid Escalating Violence in Manipur
Congress MLA Keisham Meghachandra announced on Sunday that he and other Congress MLAs from Manipur are prepared to resign due to increasing violence in the state. His statement follows violent protests on Saturday, during which the homes of three ministers and six MLAs, including Chief Minister Biren Singh, were attacked after six bodies were found in Jiribam.
Meghachandra expressed on X, “I, along with all the Congress MLAs, am ready to resign if the people of Manipur want a new mandate for peace.”
Since May 2023, Manipur has faced violent clashes, resulting in over 250 deaths and 60,000 displaced. The violence stems from disputes over government grants and quotas.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the state’s security situation in Delhi and will conduct a further assessment today. Meanwhile, CRPF Director General Anish Dayal Singh visited Manipur on Sunday to meet with local officials and discuss de-escalation efforts.
