Assam Sees Decline in Schools, Govt Plans Teacher Appointments

Assam’s school count dropped from 44,826 (2021-22) to 44,743 (2023-24) due to mergers, not closures, said Education Minister Ranoj Pegu. The state has 5,833 venture schools, with 2,340 having fewer than 30 students. A proposal has been sent to appoint head teachers in 2,993 lower primary schools, while senior-most teachers will lead others. A Cabinet subcommittee is reviewing college provincialisation. The education department has no plans to set up skill-oriented coaching centres for competitive exams.
