Custodial Death Sparks Outrage in Jonai

A theft accused, Imran Ali (25), was found dead inside Jonai Police Station lock-up on Sunday morning. He was arrested on Saturday evening from Abor Leku near the Assam-Arunachal border. Police were set to produce him in court but found him dead at 9 AM.

His family, who spoke to him hours before, suspects foul play and demands a high-level probe. Locals staged protests at the police station.

The incident adds to Assam’s rising custodial deaths, with 48 fatalities reported since 2016, as per Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
