Saikia Opposes Assam Govt’s Move to Arm Civilians in Border Areas
Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia has strongly opposed the Assam Cabinet’s decision to provide arms licences to original inhabitants in vulnerable border areas. Calling it “unconstitutional,” he warned it could reignite tensions and jeopardize peace in Assam.
In letters to Union ministers, Saikia urged immediate revocation of the policy, stating it promotes vigilante justice and violates Article 21 of the Constitution. He warned of potential rise in illegal arms and deepening social divides. Saikia called for strengthening police forces instead of arming civilians.
