Mising Community Rejects Nagaland Village Council’s Land Claim Near Assam Border
The indigenous Mising community of 2 No. Negheribil, near the Assam-Nagaland border, has strongly opposed a territorial claim made by village councils from Nagaland. At a press meet, locals emphasized that the land has been their ancestral home for generations and cannot be claimed by Nagaland.
Tensions rose after a video by village leaders from Longyim, Mikirang, and Lio Lungchung (Nagaland) claimed jurisdiction over parts of Negheribil. Mising villagers suspect third-party interference, possibly by displaced encroachers, as the cause of the dispute.
Concerns deepened after Nagaland officials, including a border magistrate, visited the area and halted developmental work ongoing since 2002. Despite a mutual agreement on border demarcation in January 2025, recent actions have disrupted peace.
The villagers have appealed for Assam government intervention and deployment of security forces to prevent further escalation. Reaffirming peaceful coexistence, they urged both governments to resolve the issue and prevent external provocation.
