Tingkhong Residents Battle Floods and Erosion as Assam Faces Dual Climate Crisis
While many districts in Assam suffer from a dry spell and looming drought, residents of Tingkhong in Dibrugarh are grappling with relentless floods and severe soil erosion caused by the Burhi Dihing River.
Over 150 families have lost hundreds of bighas of farmland, their main source of livelihood. Locals fear a breach in the embankment, which could destroy their homes. Despite government visits and surveys, no tangible action has been taken.
Residents are now pleading for immediate intervention, stating that their land is vanishing daily. Assam has long struggled with erosion — the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have eroded over 4.27 lakh hectares since 1950, with an annual loss of around 8,000 hectares
